GemStone Systems Acquisition FAQ
1. What is being announced?
SpringSource, a division of VMware, announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire GemStone, a privately held leader in enterprise data management. GemStone is headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon. The deal includes all substantial assets and employees of GemStone, but detailed terms of the deal are not disclosed.
2. What does GemStone do?
GemStone is a leader in enterprise data management and enables IT organizations to provide the right data to the right applications at the right time and with the highest level of performance and scalability. GemStone customers are industry leading Global 2000 companies, independent software companies, and systems integrators building high-performance, data-intensive solutions. GemStone has more than 200 customers including companies and organizations within financial services, energy, logistics, telecommunications, and the federal government.
3. Why is VMware acquiring GemStone?
VMWare is focused on enabling applications for the cloud, both private and public. GemStone enhances our suite of application infrastructure software with proven technology to ensure optimal performance and scalability for enterprise and cloud solutions. This acquisition expands our strategy to deliver platform as a service (PaaS) solutions that can be hosted at customer datacenters or at service providers.
4. How will GemStone be operated as part of VMware?
The GemStone team will join the SpringSource Division led by Rod Johnson, General Manager.
5. Where will the GemStone team be located?
Presently, GemStone is headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon and maintains offices in Mountain View, California, New York, Tokyo, London, and Pune, India. There is no plan to relocate the GemStone team from either Beaverton or Pune. The other GemStone sites will mostly remain intact but we will consolidate overlapping offices as appropriate. VMware and GemStone will engage in a joint planning session to determine future steps.
