Iris Interactive Drives Revenue with SpringSource Technologies

With Flexible Spring-Powered Applications, Iris Interactive Increases Productivity by 100 Percent After EJB Approach Proves Unfeasible

SAN MATEO, Calif.—June 18, 2009SpringSource, the leader in enterprise Java and the company behind Spring, today announced that Iris Interactive, an established Australian company specializing in Brand Driven Innovation software and solutions, built its flagship Iris Product Suite using Spring, the de facto standard programming model for enterprise Java applications.

With Spring, Iris Interactive is able to quickly and economically tailor its software suite to meet the needs of each of its customers, which include Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Wyeth, Revlon and Roche. Spring and all of the SpringSource technologies are focused on increasing development productivity and runtime performance while improving test coverage and application quality.

Iris Interactive developed the original release of the Iris Product Suite on a legacy application framework, but the technology was not flexible enough to meet customer needs. Iris then tried to create the platform using enterprise Java, but could not establish a feasibly interactive way of evolving software using the EJB approach. The company finally switched to Spring, using it as the primary enabler for its product suite to increase productivity by 100 percent and drive revenue.

“I can’t think of how we would do what we do without Spring, which is the nerve center of the system,” explains Janaki Joshi, CEO and co-founder of Iris Interactive. “With EJBs, we didn’t get anywhere close to completing the project. To have a customizable product would have been extremely difficult because every change was expensive, painful and hard to test. Spring’s flexibility allowed us to cater to our customers’ needs without major changes to the platform.”

Spring delivered the following business results to Iris Interactive:

  • Powered Revenue- 100 percent of Iris Interactive’s revenue is attributed to the Iris Product Suite, which is based on Spring.
  • Application Flexibility- Iris Interactive leverages Spring’s flexibility and modular architecture to continuously upgrade its products to meet changing customer needs.
  • Increased Productivity- With Spring, productivity has improved by 100 percent, enabling Iris Interactive to accelerate the development to two-week cycles for rapid releases of upgrades and spot fixes to multiple customers.
  • Bullet-Proof Tested Application Quality- Spring promotes test-driven development, enabling Iris Interactive to test every piece of code and conduct extensive integration tests to prevent surprises during deployment.

“Iris Interactive’s experience demonstrates how Spring’s modular architecture makes it possible to develop lean Java applications at a very low cost,” said Shaun Connolly, vice president of product management for SpringSource. “As the company behind the most ubiquitous Java development platform, Spring, we are pleased to see Iris Interactive benefit from tools and platforms we have helped to create.”
