Study Shows Spring Adoption Soaring to 73%
SAN MATEO, Calif.—November 19, 2008 – SpringSource, a leading provider of infrastructure software and the company behind Spring, the de facto standard in enterprise Java, today announced that results from an extensive Evans Data research study reveal large scale adoption and penetration of Spring as a means of increasing developer productivity and combating complexity in today’s enterprise application infrastructure market.
According to the study:
- For organizations of all sizes, 47% responded that they use Spring today;
- 73% of all organizations responded that they use Spring or plan to use Spring within two years;
- 83% of organizations with 500 or more developers are using Spring today. This is further confirmed by preliminary results from a 2008 Java Trends Survey compiled by The ServerSide, which shows a 78% adoption of Spring.
The increase in adoption is a result of an overwhelming majority of respondents who say that developer productivity and faster project completion are both key reasons for Spring usage. In the research study:
- 82% say developer productivity is the top reason to use Spring;
- 61% responded that replacing EJBs with Spring resulted in a more than 25% increase in developer productivity and 35% garnered more than a 50% increase in developer productivity;
- 60% cite faster project completion and application quality as top reasons for using Spring.
“Throughout the year, we’ve seen a landslide of data and testimonials supporting Spring’s penetration and success throughout the enterprise, dramatically reducing complexity in enterprise Java at a time when organizations need to maximize all of their application and development resources,” said Rod Johnson, CEO of SpringSource. “Enterprise developers and architects have rallied behind Spring as critical to the success of their application infrastructure from inception through production.”
Spring has transformed the enterprise Java landscape and become the most widely used enterprise Java application platform worldwide. Spring has been downloaded more than 5 million times and jobs listings requiring Spring expertise already exceed requirements for Oracle WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, and Enterprise JavaBean™ (EJB™) experience.
“In years of conducting research, it is rare that a single enterprise-class application technology has near fifty percent penetration, and then soars to near three-quarters adoption in such a short time,” said John Andrews, President and CEO of Evans Data Corp. “The research clearly demonstrates significant adoption of Spring, based on clear, concise and measurable benefits.”
The Evans Data research is based on an extensive survey of programmers/software engineers; project leads/team leaders; project managers; software architects; departmental development managers; CTOs; VPs and CEOs; and web developers. All respondents are involved in the development of enterprise Java applications.
